Vegan makeup products are cosmetics that do not use ingredients derived from — or tested on — animals. Concerns about animal abuse by the cosmetic industry has created a growing market for cruelty free products. Vegan cosmetic options include eye shadow, blush, lipstick and foundation; even vegan nail polish is becoming increasingly available.
Most companies that make vegan cosmetics will also make them cruelty free, but often those that are cruelty free are not necessary vegan. Organic means that no chemicals are used in their formulations but since there is little to regulate this term when used in cosmetics it is important to understand that if you are looking for plant or mineral based cosmetics that you will want to look for a cosmetic that specifies that. You will also want to verify that the plants and minerals used come from an organic source. In the same way because the brand you choose claim to be vegan cosmetics, does not mean automatically that they are natural or organic, although most often they are.
Cruelty free cosmetics are not the same thing as vegan cosmetics, cruelty free simply means that the products are not tested on animals and does not mean that there are not animal products in them. Many people get confused by these two terms and assume they are interchangeable when they are not.
