Be Nice To Your Makeup

We poke, we prod, we smudge—sometimes, we’re downright rude to our precious products. But bad beauty manners no more! Learn tips to treat your makeup and skin care products with more respect.
1. Protect your products.
Beauty products need SPF just as much as your face does. The pigments in your makeup are incredibly sensitive, and can fade when exposed to prolonged direct sunlight. The ingredients in many vitamin C serums and sunscreens can become highly unstable upon UV exposure, which means they’re not as effective at doing their job on your skin. To preserve product functionality, keep all makeup and skin products away from windows and bright lights. If possible, decant the contents of clear plastic and glass bottles into opaque blue or brown bottles to further reduce light exposure.
2. Prevent bacterial growth.
You know what beauty products hate most? Heat and moisture. So why is it that most Beauties store their collections in the bathroom? Steam from the shower helps propagate bacterial growth all over, so it’s time for a makeup moving day! For those who can’t bear to banish their makeup entirely, compromise by at least taking out bacteria-happy cream-based makeup. Store your skin care regimen under the sink or in a cool, dry place.
3. Give it a rinse.
If you have to think hard to recall when you last washed your makeup brushes, perhaps there’s a problem. Cleaning the packaging of your beauty staples can prevent so much dirt and dead skin cell buildup. Give your favorite products a weekly swipe with a clean, damp washcloth (or a disposable face wipe for the ultra-lazy). Also, dry off your bath accessories after a hot shower to prevent rust—it’s possible to keep the same razor blade fresh for weeks!

The Best Brush For The Job

Ever wonder which brushes are best for your foundation, concealer, powder, and lipstick? , Whether you should spend a fortune on a new set, and how long your brushes should last. This week, we find out which brushes are best for all of your makeup products, and get special tips on using them.

Blush: MAC Duo Fiber #187 Brush & Tom Ford Cheek Brush

"Generally, I like to apply blush to the apples of the cheeks,” . “If you have high cheekbones, apply the blush farther out and concentrate more on your cheekbones. I like the MAC brush for cream blush, and the Tom Ford  for powder.

Bronzer: EcoTools Kabuki Bronzer Brush

"This little brush is so cute and super soft, and it's great for creating a natural glow with bronzer,” “Always apply bronzer where the sun would naturally hit your face, and avoid those that are sparkly. They look good only on your cheeks, not all over your face."

Eye Shadow: MAC #217 Brush

"This brush is perfect for applying and blending color,”  “I love the soft domed shape, which makes blending a breeze!"

Concealer: Face Stockholm #15 Brush

"This is the only brand that makes a brush this size and shape. The brush has a very thin profile, so you can easily get just the right amount of concealer where you want it, “For pimples I like to be able to feather out the product, and this brush lets me do that perfectly."

Lipstick: Japonesque Pro Eye Detailer Brush

"These are meant for the eyes, but I love to use them for lipstick, especially when you want a sharp line for a bright or bold color,”  “These brushes come in ideal sizes (I like the small and medium for lips), and have the perfect stiffness."

How To: Turn Eye Shadow Into Nail Polish

We've already shown you fun and easy ways to save on makeup, but did you know you can create your own nail polish color out of eye shadow? It's true! When you don't want to splurge on a new polish, just break out your old shadows (if they’re cracked or broken, that's even better! Colored pigments work too) and repurpose for your fingertips. You can mix colors to achieve the exact shade you want—perfect when creating complex, intricate designs or effects. Plus, you know no one else in the world will be wearing your one-of-a-kind color. But the best part? The process takes less than 10 minutes! Keep reading as we walk you through this simple DIY project. Try it at home and tweet us your pictures!
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
  1. 1 eye shadow (mineral is preferred because of its finer pigment texture)
  2. 1 clear nail polish
  3. 1 small mixing bowl (a disposable paper cup works too)

Step 1

PREP EYE SHADOW
Start by gently tapping a loose eye shadow into a small bowl. If you are using a solid shadow, scrape it out of the palette using a kitchen knife. Because you want your polish to apply smoothly without bumps, use your knife to smash any larger pigment bits into dust. You should have about a spoonful of powder, which will be enough for all 10 digits. For an exact measurement, tap eye shadow into a spoon before dumping it into the bowl.

Step 2

MIX IN CLEAR NAIL POLISH
Use the brush on your clear nail polish (we opted for a base and topcoat combo) to add 25 to 30 drops to the bowl with the eye shadow. If you are feeling more confident, pour drops directly from the bottle. Remove the cotton from one end of a Q-tip and use the stick to stir eye shadow and nail polish together until they blend into a colored liquid form. You should be able to tell if your polish is too thick or too thin and adjust accordingly by adding more powder or more clear polish to the mix. Be sure to blend well. The smoother the formula, the better it will apply to your nails.

Step 3

PAINT
Because the blend is exposed to air, it will dry quickly, so begin to paint your nails right away. Use the brush from your clear nail polish to apply. Don't worry—you can soak the brush in nail polish remover later to remove the polish (it will be as good as new!). Like a high-lacquered finish? Apply a clear topcoat to your manicure. Voil√†! Custom holographic nail color.
